6. Daye ProViotics: Best for Vaginal Health

For Daye’s newest addition their ProViotics, we have done an in-depth review here below.

When it comes to women’s health, many of us don’t really know what we’re supposed to be doing…down there.

There are certainly plenty of myths surrounding women’s intimate health. These include a range of vaginal cleaning products (which hopefully you’ve never been tempted to use!)

Probiotics for women are a relatively new concept though and one that’s already controversial in medical circles.

Yet even with modern medicine, we still have 21 million women suffering from bacterial vaginosis in the US alone, and another 138 million women suffering from recurrent thrush.

It’s clear that we need to find a better, more natural solution for women’s health.

Daye believe they’ve found it with their newly launched ProViotic. It’s a probiotic which is designed specifically to help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in these intimate areas. It claims to:

  • help with bacterial vaginosis.
  • help with thrush and yeast infections.
  • prevent these infections from recurring after treatment.

Each tablet contains 5 billion live cells of lactobacillus plantarum GLP3.

Lactobacillus is the main bacteria needed to keep the vagina healthy. So these probiotics are designed with women’s wellness in mind.

Here we take a closer look at their probiotics, what exactly they can do for us and how effective they are at curing thrush and BV.

As Daye also offer other innovative products in the women’s wellness industry, here’s a quick summary of what they do:

  • 5 billion live cells of Lactobacillus plantarum (the specific strain that helps with vaginal health).

When Should you Use a Probiotic for Women?
Do Vaginal Probiotics Work?
Which is the Best Priobiotic for Women?

Are Probiotics Good for Vaginal Health?

Although this is a new field and research is ongoing, there are strong signs that taking the right probiotic can help with vaginal health.

This is because it helps to maintain a good balance of bacteria within the vagina.

It could even help it fight off some of the more common infections like bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections.

How Can Probiotics Help With Women’s Health?

The vagina is home to billions of bacteria which make up your vaginal microbiome (or vaginal ecosystem). This is very similar to how the bacteria in your gut work, some are good bacteria and others are bad bacteria.

The good bacteria are needed to fight off infections. This can include preventing thrush and BV.

Having high levels of good bacteria can also affect how likely you are to contract a sexually transmitted infection, develop certain kinds of cancers and carry a pregnancy to term.

The most important bacteria for a healthy vaginal microbiome is Lactobacillus.

This bacteria creates lactic acid which in turn keeps your vagina at the right pH level, which is quite acidic.

The vagina does naturally creates Lactobacillus, so if you have no signs of vaginal imbalances then you may prefer not to take a vaginal probiotic.

Many of us experience times when the balance is disrupted, like when we have unprotected sex, or take a course of antibiotics.

In these cases a probiotic can help restore the balance in the vagina, and to prevent future infections.

Dr. Harry Baxter, the female health expert at Daye explains:

Probiotics are an excellent method for giving your good bacteria a helping hand — by introducing some other good bacteria to stand in while they get back on their feet.

When Should You Take a Probiotic for Your Vagina?

Probiotics designed for vaginal health can help those suffering from recurring thrush or bacterial vaginosis.

However there are a number of other occasions when taking a probiotic could be beneficial as well:

  • After Unprotected Sex. Unprotected sex can lead to STIs and pregnancy. However, it can also disrupt the balance of your vaginal microbiome. Semen is alkaline in pH. When it enters the vagina, it can throw off the vagina’s acidity, which may lead to a build up of bad bacteria.
  • After Excessive Cleaning. Many women are still under the false impression that the vagina needs to be cleaned with a special wash. However, this can also wash away your healthy bacteria and disrupt the vagina’s delicate pH balance.
  • After Antibiotics. If you’ve been on a course of antibiotics for a vaginal infection, the make-up of your microbiome may have shifted. A probiotic can help to rebalance the vaginal bacteria.
  • After Using Tampons. Dr Baxter explains that “Tampons can provide a breeding ground for bad bacteria”. So, after your period, a probiotic may help to reintroduce Lactobacilli into your system.

When the vagina’s microbiome in disrupted there tends to be a change in its pH.

At a healthy pH level harmful pathogens like E. coli, Staph, and Candida, will find it harder to grow.

The ideal levels for the vaginal microbiome are at a pH of 3.8-4.5 which is quite acidic.

By introducing good bacteria into your system, your microbiome is able to get back to this healthy acidic state more easily.

There are even longer term benefits of having very high levels of these good bacteria in your system.

A recent study showed that having very high levels of Lactobacillus – in the region of 90% –  could reduce the risk of STIs and ovarian cancer.

If these findings are confirmed, it means that up until now we have seriously overlooked the importance of a healthy vaginal microbiome.

Which Probiotics Are Best for Yeast Infections and BV?

Probiotics designed specifically to support the vaginal microbiome are the best probiotics to take for yeast infections and BV.

Daye’s ProViotics are the best we’ve found. They are backed by detailed scientific research into the best way to support a healthy vaginal microbiome.

One way they do this is by providing only 1 bacteria: Lactobacillus plantarum.

This bacteria is the most important for the vaginal microbiome to stay healthy.

It helps keep the vagina at the optimum pH, enabling it to better fight off infections.

There could also be further longer term health benefits to having this bacteria in very high levels.

Who Makes ProViotics?

Valentina Milanova founded Daye in 2018 and in doing so has completely changed the conversation on women’s hygiene.

Daye create organic tampons which aim to be the highest quality and most absorbent on the market.

They also have their unique CBD tampons. These use CBD oil to soothe period cramps in a more natural and effective way. (You can see their tampons in review here).

The company’s goal is to ‘lift the veil’ on less talked about women’s health issues in everything they do.

So launching their line of ProViotics was the perfect fit for them.

These probiotics are designed to support vaginal health by helping to rebalance the vaginal microbiome.

This can prevent common problems like recurring thrush or bacterial vaginosis.

As well as all this, Daye run an expert-written blog called Vitals.

Their articles breakdown complex scientific research into simple language.

In this way they help young women to understand more about female health and what can affect it.

What Can ProViotics Help With?

The main goal of ProViotics is to help women who suffer from recurring vaginal infections.

Women living in the modern world are in touch with a number of factors that can disturb the balance of bacteria in the vagina.

This includes antibiotics, some forms of contraception and stress, among others.

These can all negatively impact the natural vaginal microbiome and make these imbalances more common.

Following extensive research, Daye discovered that having high levels of Lactobacilli (the good bacteria) can help women get over vaginal infections more quickly.

It can also improve the cure rate for women on antibiotics, and in some cases even prevent future infections.

Daye also want to start the general discussion about vaginal health which they feel is too often overlooked:

As a society, we’ve heard plenty on how integral good bacteria is for your gut; strangely there’s a lot less out there on how good bacteria (lactobacilli) influence vaginal health.

Even women who are suffering from recurring infections, are not necessarily discussing the option of vaginal probiotics with their doctor.

Why Are ProViotics Different From Regular Probiotics?

ProViotics are designed to help the vaginal microbiome, while regular probiotics are designed to help the gut and body in general.

ProViotics do this by including only high levels of the bacteria needed most in the vagina. Each tablet contains 5 billion live cultures of lactobacillus plantarium GLP3.

This is the strain that Daye have identified as being the most beneficial for a healthy balance in the vagina. The strain has also been clinically validated for safety and functionality as well as for vaginal health.

On the Living Life Well podcast, CEO Valentina Milanova explained that this strain of lactobacilli was

Specially developed for vaginal health conditions.

unlike many other probiotic options.

How Do Daye Make Their ProViotics?

The cultures of Lactobacillus plantarium are grown in organic carrot juice.

As Daye points out, most other brands use milk cultures, which may not be suitable for all women. This method of growing the probiotic makes it suitable for vegans.

The bacteria is then freeze-dried. This means that the product can be stored in the cupboard and will last longer than other similar products.

Can Probiotics Cure Thrush and BV?

Daye are extremely proud of their extensive testing process for their ProViotics.

They teamed up with the Center for Applied Science and Innovation to perform a study on 29 women with thrush or BV.

According to the study 28 out of 29 women with thrush were cured after a ten day course of ProViotics.

This means Daye has a 97% rate of success, which is higher than the 86% average efficacy of current treatments. Daye also found that their ProViotics caused fewer side effects than other forms of medication.

These initial results indicate that probiotics can help cure thrush.

ProViotic Reviews: What Others are Saying

While there aren’t many reviews of the product yet, as it’s newly launched, the ones that are out are glowing.

The probiotics have also sold out in a number of retailers as they have become very popular.

Here are some sample reviews that have come in so far:

What I Thought of ProViotics

My first tin of Daye’s new probiotics arrived in a rectangular parcel.

Inside was a beautifully colored cardboard box with information about Daye and a small leaflet. The leaflet briefly explained what the ProViotics are intended to help with and the importance of a healthy vaginal microbiome.

best probiotic for yeast infection - proviotics review - best proviotic for bv

The pills were sealed in the silver tin both with both an internal seal and an external one.

best probiotic for yeast infection - proviotics review - best proviotic for bv

When I opened up the tin I found 30 pills which were small round discs, about 1cm in diameter.

They looked natural and completely free from added coatings or casings that other pills have.

I took my first pill and found it tasted slightly like carrot. This must be because the bacterial culture is grown in organic carrot juice, but it was a nice change from other probiotics which taste – quite frankly – disgusting.

Although I had no problem taking the pills if I suggested any improvement it might be that the pills could be slightly smaller for swallowing.

However they can also inserted in the vagina at night and this in fact may be a more effective way to use them.

Either way these probiotics look completely natural and haven’t been processed to make them look more attractive.

ProViotics Alternatives

One alternative probiotic that also targets vaginal health is Ora Organic’s Lady Bugs.

It contains more strains of probiotics compared to ProViotics so it might provide more holistic support (see our full Ora Organic review here).

How to Use ProViotics?

Daye’s ProViotics are sold in cute aluminium reusable tins that feature the company’s distinctive, fun graphic design.

Each tin costs £21 and contains 30 x 400mg tablets. The tin can be stored in a cool dry place, they don’t need to be refrigerated.

The ingredients list is pretty simple — these tablets are 100% Lactobacillus plantarium GLP3, Daye’s unique strain of lactobacillus.

The tablets can be taken either orally or vaginally — both methods work.

Oral Probiotic

If you’re taking the tablet orally, it should be taken 1-3 times a day, either with food or on an empty stomach.

They recommend taking the tablets for 30 consecutive days for the best results.

Vaginal Probiotic

If you’re taking the tablet vaginally, Daye says you should lie on your back, and use clean hands to insert one tablet deeply into the vagina before bed.

With this method a 10-day course of tablets should give you results.

Do Vaginal Probiotics Work?

The research on probiotics for vaginal health is new and it seems, ever changing.

Traditional findings dismiss the effectiveness of vaginal probiotics. This includes a Harvard Health article of 2019 which said they were not particularly effective.

However even in this article, their expert Dr Caroline Mitchell conceded that women with BV could benefit from a probiotic.

When we take a look at the more recent studies, it seems that probiotics have been shown to work.

In one study, 57 women with BV were given either a probiotic or a placebo. While 0% of the placebo cases were cured, up to 57% of the women who were given a probiotic were cured after about a week.

In another study, women with BV were given either an antibiotic and a probiotic or an antibiotic and a placebo.

The women who took the probiotic experienced a 90% cure rate, while the placebo women only experienced a 40% cure rate.

So, based on the evidence coming in, it seems that probiotics are effective, especially for bacterial infections like BV and thrush.

Probiotics for Yeast Infection

Yeast infections or thrush are usually treated with antifungals. This may be effective at dealing with isolated cases of thrush but it doesn’t prevent it from returning after the treatment has finished.

In addition to this the fungi may build up a resistance to the antifungals over time, making the treatment less effective.

It’s estimated that 138 million women still deal with recurrent thrush.

A vaginal probiotic works a little differently. It helps to rebalance the bacteria in the vagina, returning it to the healthiest pH levels which prevents Candida from taking over.

In fact Daye’s ProViotic was 97% effective against thrush in clinically validated studies.

Users also found a low rate of recurrence of thrush after treatment.

Their probiotics seem to solve the root of the problem, rather than dealing with the one-off infection.

Probiotics for Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is another common problem that millions of women face.

The treatment is antibiotics, which does get rid of the bad bacteria, but also kills off the good bacteria as well.

This disrupts the balance of the vaginal microbiome, leaving it open to infections in the future.

Daye’s ProViotics provide high levels of Lactobacillus plantarum. This is the bacteria that helps with vaginal health.

This can not only help treat BV, it can also prevent it from coming back in the future.

Is Daye ProViotic Worth It?

The best probiotic for vaginal health is one that is designed to help build up good bacteria in that area.

Daye’s ProViotics only contain bacteria that help with the vaginal microbiome.

The bacteria that grows in the vagina, Lactobacillus, is responsible for keeping the vagina at a healthy, acidic pH level. When people talk about the vagina’s self-cleaning mechanism, this is what they mean.

When the levels of Lactobacillus are disrupted – which can occur through unprotected sex, various types of contraception, excessive washing, or even a hormonal imbalance – vaginal infections can occur. That’s where vaginal probiotics can help.

In the same way that gut probiotics like yogurt drinks, rebalance the good bacteria in our stomachs, vaginal probiotics can support the natural growth of good bacteria in the vagina.

Daye’s new ProViotics are a great option as they are extensively researched and tested. As a company they also have a commitment to openness and honesty with their customers, so it’s easy to trust them.

While research is ongoing, initial studies showed that these tablets had as much as a 97% success rate after ten days, curing 28 out of 29 cases of thrush. Initial results also show that these probiotics may also minimize cases of reinfection.

As the latest in a series of innovative women’s health products it seems that Daye have done it again with their ProViotics.

Which is the Best Probiotic for Women?

The best probiotic for you depends on several factors like what health issues you’re targeting, budget, supplement format (powder or capsules).

If you’re looking for something to address menopause symptoms specifically, then MenoLabs may suit you. While Daye ProViotics helps those that want to reduce vaginal health issues like thrush or bacterial vaginosis.

On the other hand, Youngevity Beyond Tangy Tangerine, Organifi Balance, and Microbiome Plus+ provide more holistic support in various areas that not only apply to women — like digestion, heart health, energy, and immunity.

For those that are looking for vegan-friendly probiotics, Ora Organics is our top recommendation in this category.

Thankfully, there are many probiotics to address a variety of female health concerns. Now that you have a better understanding of the best options, the next step is to try one and see if it works for you!
