Summary
Time: 10 minutes
Age: Little kids to Big kids
Difficulty: Easy peasy
You will need:
- T-shirt – brightly coloured or black
- Scissors
- Velcro dots
- Felt
- Strong glue (a glue gun or fabric glue)
Step 1: Cut off the sleeves
Lay your t-shirt down flat and cut off the sleeves.
Step 2: Cut up both sides
Now cut up both sides of your t shirt to the arm opening.
Step 3: Lay your t-shirt out flat on the table
Open out your t-shirt and lay it out flat on the table so that you can see both sides, with the neck opening in the centre.
Step 4: Cut round the neck on one side
On one side of your t-shirt, cut around the neck line.
You are cutting away the whole of this side, leaving just the neck line attached.
Step 5: Trim your cape
Trim the side edges a little to get a really nice cape shape. You don’t need to worry about sewing any hems as the t shirt material usually doesn’t fray.
Step 6: Add velcro
Cut the neck line at the front of the cape in the centre and stick down velcro dots.
This is to make it safer and so that your child can put their cape on and take it off really easily.
Step 7: Add some snazzy designs
Cut large shapes from felt to decorate your cape. You can make any shapes or designs you like.
You might even choose to cut out the initial letter of your child’s name.
Your capes are all ready for your little superhero
Ta-dah! You’ve made a cape in minutes. All ready for your little superhero to dress up in.
You can use this same technique to make any style of cape you like.
If you add a velvet ribbon to the top and bottom, you get a cloak fit for a prince or princess.
If you glue down sequins and sparkles, you get a magical cape for an ice queen.
It’s a great way to make DIY costumes at home or for World Book Day outfits at school.
