When can babies eat strawberries?
The exact age of when a baby is able to eat strawberries is still uncertain as there is conflicting advice depending on the professional you consult or country you are in.
Doctors used to advise that parents wait until baby is older (at least 8 months, sometimes 1 year old) before introducing berries such as strawberries or raspberries.
Many still recommend waiting, particularly if there are allergies in the family.
However, a number of recent studies have shown that babies could benefit from being exposed to a greater variety of foods from early on. It’s thought that having a varied diet could reduce the risk of baby developing allergies later on.
Some things to consider when introducing strawberries and other raspberries to baby
Strawberries and other berries are considered highly allergenic foods and so should be introduced to baby with caution for the first time.
Introduce it in small quantities, on its own and not before baby’s sleep. Keep an eye out for any signs of allergies after the meal.
If your family has a history of allergies, or your baby has eczema, always speak to your paediatrician first before introducing new foods. Particularly ones that are common allergens (like berries).
We have suggested 8m+ for this recipe due to the varied advice. This is also due to the slightly acidic nature of strawberries and raspberries which can affect some babies’ tummies.
You can always discuss it with a doctor if you wish to introduce them to baby sooner.
If you are worried that 8 months is too early for baby, you can simply remove the berries from this recipe. It will still have plenty of Vitamin C.
