Time: 10 minutes
Age: Little kids to Big kids
Difficulty: Easy peasy
You will need:
- Brown and pink paints – we used acrylic paints
- Paint brush
- Paper drinking straw
- Cotton buds
- Elastic bands
- A sheet of card/paper
Step 1: Start your tree
Mix some brown paint with water. You need it to be nice and runny but to still be a bold colour.
Fill an egg cup a quarter full of water and squeeze in some paint and mix until you get a nice brown watery paint.
Now lightly brush shapes to make the trunk of your tree and a few rough branches.
Drop some paint on top of the lines you make so that the tree trunk and branches are very watery.
Step 2: Have fun blowing the branches
Now take a paper drinking straw and hold the end very close to your brown paint.
Blow through the straw and watch the paint spread out and make patterns.
You can blow from different directions to make the paint travel in a different way. Keep blowing until you have made a tree with lots of branches.
If your tree needs some more branches, just add a few more blobs of watery paint and keep blowing until you are happy with how it looks.
Step 3: Your tree is now ready to decorate
Leave your tree to dry. Because the paint is watery it doesn’t take long at all.
Step 4: Make your cotton bud printer
Take 4 or 5 cotton buds and secure them together in a bunch using an elastic band.
Squeeze out some pink paint onto a paper plate or piece of thick cardboard.
If you can it’s great to use 2 or 3 different shades of pink.
Step 5: Start printing your cherry blossoms
Dip the ends of your cotton bud bundle into some dark pink paint and start making prints all over the branches of your tree.
Step 6: Add more blossom and colour
Dip your cotton buds into a lighter shade of pink and add more prints all over the tree. You can overlap the darker pink prints you made.
Add as many different colours and blossom prints as you like.
Super simple to paint and amazing to look at when they’re finished these trees are a great spring craft for kids.
