Difficulty: Easy peasy
Makes: 2 bowls of puree

When can baby start to eat peas?

Peas make for a great first food and can be introduced  whenever your baby starts solids, usually from 6 months onwards. As always if you have concerns about your baby starting solids do talk to your doctor about it further.

Are frozen peas ok?

Frozen peas are great. They can be combined with other fresh vegetables like squash or carrots to make a delicious meal. As well as this one, we also have another recipe for babies – our pea soup with mint and baby’s milk to create a delicious simple meal.

How do I make a pea puree for babies?

Making puree is very simple. You just boil or steam the ingredients until they are soft. In this case this is the peas, potatoes and leeks.

You then drain them (if boiling) and place them in a blender with a small amount of water or baby’s milk. Blend away! If it’s too thick you can add some more water or baby’s milk and blend again.

What consistency should the puree be?

When babies first start solids it is generally best to start with a runny puree. This is because it is more similar to milk and is usually easier for them to swallow.

As the weeks go by and they get older and more used to eating solids it’s good to very gradually make the purees a little thicker. After a few months you could even try leaving small soft chunks in the puree so that baby can get used to mashing these around in his mouth.

Can I give baby finger food?

Of course. With every puree recipe you can put some pieces aside before blending the ingredients and give the cooked soft pieces to your baby as finger foods. They will love practising bringing the food to their mouths and exploring the textures. They can eat these pieces alongside their puree if you like.

Ingredients

  • 50 grams peas
  • 1 small potato
  • 1 leek
  • Baby’s milk (formula or expressed breast milk) or water

Instructions

  1. Peel and chop the potato. Chop the white parts of the leek.
  2. Steam or boil for about 10-15 minutes, or until the potato is soft throughout.
  3. Drain and place in a blender with a little water or baby’s milk (formula or breast milk). Blend into a thick puree.
  4. Add more water or baby’s milk and blend again to achieve the desired consistency.

If you would like to give your baby some finger food, take a few pieces of potato out of the steamer and put aside to offer your baby whole.

Place the rest of the ingredients into your blender and blend until thick and smooth.

You can add a little baby milk (breastmilk or formula) or water to make it thinner and achieve the desired consistency.
