If you’re child suffers from tree nut allergies, you know how stressful it can be to check the ingredients of foods. You might also feel like there are so many foods that are off-limits, one of which may be Nutella.
 
So we thought we’d try and cross that one off your list with this nut-free Nutella alternative!
 
Made with sunflower seeds instead of tree nuts, it’s nut-free and is also a snap to make. Enjoy it on pancakes, in crepes and on toast for family breakfasts.

How to make nut free Nutella alternative

Nut free nutella alternative - try this homemade chocolate spread made with sunflower seeds over nuts

Making a homemade chocolate spread is so much easier than you may have expected.

You start by toasting the sunflower seeds in the oven until roasted.

Then you simply buzz them in a blender with your coconut oil, vanilla, sugar, and melted chocolate.

And just like that you have your very own nut free Nutella alternative chocolate spread!

Ingredients

  • 225 grams milk chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 1 cup sunflower seeds (150 grams)
  • ½ tablespoon of sugar
  • ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C fan setting.
  2. Lay the sunflower seeds out on a shallow baking tray, spreading them out as much as possible.
  3. Toast them in the oven until golden, which should be about 8-10 minutes. Don’t let them overcook. Take them out when you start to smell roasted sunflower seeds. Set to one side to let them cool down.
  4. Melt your chocolate by placing it in a glass heatproof bowl and stirring it over a saucepan of boiling water. Add the coconut oil and mix into the chocolate as it’s melting.
  5. Place the toasted sunflower seeds, sugar and salt (the dry ingredients) in a food processor. Blend until it makes a clumpy, thick mixture.
  6. Add in the melted chocolate with coconut oil and vanilla extract. Blend again until you get a thick mixture.
  7. Transfer mixture to a small glass jar and enjoy with your next breakfast!

Toast the sunflower seeds

Prepare by heating your oven to 180°C fan setting.

Lay the sunflower seeds out on a baking sheet, spreading them out as much as possible.

Bake for between 8 and 10 minutes, or until you smell toasted sunflower seeds. Take care not to over cook them, you want them to be only lightly toasted.

Remove them from the oven and set to one side to cool down.

Melt the chocolate

Meanwhile, melt the chocolate with your coconut oil.

You can pop it in the microwave on a low setting.

Or you can place it in a heatproof bowl with the coconut oil, and stir it over a saucepan of boiling water on a low heat until liquid.

Blend the sunflower seeds

Add the sunflower seeds together with the salt and sugar to a mixer and blend until you get a clumpy mixture.

Add in the rest of the ingredients

Add the melted chocolate and coconut oil mixture to the blender, as well as ½ teaspoon vanilla extract.

Blend until smooth.
