Magical Milk Carton Fairy Houses
In this activity we show you how to make two beautiful and very different fairy houses. You can follow the tutorials or just use them as inspiration to design and create your own.
If you’re don’t have all the materials at home then don’t worry, even Sharpie pens alone can be used to draw out windows and doors to create pretty houses. Otherwise you could use paints or natural materials like moss as we have done below. Either way we hope the kids enjoy this ‘magical’ craft activity.
Summary
Time: 20 minutes
Ages: Toddlers to Big Kids
Difficulty: Easy peasy
Milk Carton Fairy House 1: Shimmering Pink
You will need:
- Empty milk carton
- Scissors
- Paints – acrylic paints work well on plastic
- Paintbrush
- Glitter
- Gems or sequins
- Glue
Step 1: Cut out the windows and doors
Cut out shapes to make the windows and doors of your fairy house. Leave one side of the door attached so that it can flap open and closed.
A sharp pair of scissors works best and it’s usually advisable for an adult to prep this bit.
Step 2: Paint your milk carton and cover with glitter
Paint your milk carton in the colour of your choice.
Acrylic paint covers the plastic in a thick coat of paint. While the paint is still wet sprinkle on some glitter to make it shimmer.
Step 3: Add gold details
Paint your door and around your windows in gold.
Step 4: Stick on sequins and gems
Stick on shiny gems and sequins to add finishing details to your fairy house. You can use your creativity to make it your own.
Milk Carton Fairy House 2: Woodland Fairy Home
You will need:
- Empty milk carton
- Scissors
- Glue
- Moss
- Sticks
- Leaves
Step 1: Cut out the windows and doors
Cut out shapes from the milk carton to make the windows and doors. Leave the door flap attached so that you can open and close it.
It’s often best if adults prepare this part.
Step 2: Cover your milk carton in moss
Spread glue over your milk carton and stick patches of moss onto it.
Cover the whole surface with moss.
Step 3: Cover the door with twigs
Glue down sticks to make the door. You can trim them afterwards to neaten the edges.
You could even glue down a daisy as a doorknob.
Step 4: Add a roof
Glue down a large leaf onto the top of the milk carton as a roof to your fairy house.
Making Your Own Milk Carton Fairy Houses
You can use an empty milk carton as a base for different fairy house designs. Either follow our guides here or let your child’s imagination run free to design your own.
For example you could cover the surface with tissue paper and paint a rainbow on the door.
You could even pop a battery operated tea light into the milk carton to make it give out a magical glow.
